Why Order 310 SS Pipe & Tube From MTS

01

Grade Advice Before You Buy

Tell us temperature, atmosphere and cycle. We will tell you if 310S fits, or if 309, 253MA or 330 suits better.

02

Cut to Length in Our Plant

Our tube laser cuts 310S pipe & tube up to 350 mm OD, 10 mm wall and 9 m long. Furnace parts arrive at the length you need.

03

Wall Thickness for Long Life

At high heat, scale eats wall from both sides. Seamless 310S runs walls from 1 to 12 mm, so you can choose a heavier wall where a thin one would scale through too fast.

04

Certificates With Carbon Shown

310 and 310S differ only in carbon. Your certificate shows actual C, so you know which one you have.

05

Processing Capacity and Delivery

We process up to 100,000 tons a month and keep 3,000 tons of stainless pipe & tube in stock in 60,000 m² of warehouse space in Wuxi. Our own cranes load every container for Shanghai, Qingdao or Tianjin.

Built to Survive the Heat

310 stainless contains about 25% chromium and 20% nickel. At high temperature, the chromium forms a tight oxide scale. That scale protects the metal from further attack.

That makes 310 stainless steel pipe & tube a standard choice for furnace parts. Radiant tubes, kiln burners and hot gas lines use it too. It is not a grade for wet corrosion. Its value starts where 304 and 316 begin to scale.

Choosing 310 Stainless Steel Pipe & Tube for High-Temperature Service

310, 310S or 310H?

Plain 310 allows up to 0.25% carbon. It is rare today. Most stainless steel 310 pipe & tube sold now is 310S, with carbon under 0.08%.

Lower carbon makes 310S easier to weld and less prone to sensitization. ASTM A312 lists it as TP310S. Some older specs say A312 TP310. In practice, the market supplies 310S against both.

310H keeps carbon at 0.04–0.10% for creep strength. Choose it for parts that carry pressure or weight for years above about 600°C.

What 310S Does Well

310S resists oxidation in air to about 1,100°C. It also handles sulfur-free combustion gases and mild carburizing atmospheres.

It keeps its shape better than 304 at red heat. For burner pipes, radiant tubes and hot air lines, it often lasts several times longer than 304.

Where 310S Struggles

Sulfur. Hot gases with sulfur attack nickel. In high-sulfur flue gas, 310S can fail fast. A lower-nickel grade such as 309 is often better.

The 550–900°C band. Long service in this range can form sigma phase. The metal becomes brittle at room temperature. This matters if parts are hit or flexed during shutdowns.

Fast thermal cycling. Repeated heating and cooling cracks the oxide scale. Fresh metal oxidizes again, and the wall thins faster.

Our view: 310S is right for steady high heat. For cycling, sulfur or the middle band, ask before you order.

310 or Another Heat-Resistant Grade?

309 stainless steel pipe & tube. 23% chromium, 13% nickel. It costs less than 310 and works to about 1,000°C. Use 309 where the heat is lower or the gas contains sulfur.

253MA pipe & tube. A lean alloy with cerium and nitrogen. It resists oxidation like 310S, with higher strength at heat. Good for thin-wall parts with cycling. Quoted on request.

330 stainless steel pipe & tube. 35% nickel. It resists carburizing and nitriding better than 310S. Common in heat treatment fixtures and retorts.

TP347H. A creep grade, not a scaling grade. Use A312 TP347H pipe or SA213 TP347H tube for superheater lines up to about 815°C.

321 and 304H. These serve hot process lines below about 815°C. They cost less than 310S if oxidation is not the main issue. See the grade notes on our Stainless Steel Pipe & Tube page.

Wall Thickness and Service Life

At 1,000°C and above, scale forms inside and outside. A thin wall can lose its strength within a few seasons. For radiant tubes and burner pipes, we usually suggest Sch 40S or a heavy tube wall.

Strength also drops sharply with heat. Material that is fine cold may sag at 1,000°C. Keep support spans shorter than in cold service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 310 and 310S pipe & tube?

Carbon. 310 allows up to 0.25%, while 310S limits it to 0.08%. 310S welds more easily and is the normal grade today. Both resist oxidation the same way. Order TP310S unless your drawing says otherwise.

What is the maximum temperature for 310 ss pipe & tube?

About 1,100°C in clean air for continuous use, and about 1,035°C for cyclic use. Pressure parts are limited by the design code, often well below this. Sulfur or reducing gases lower the limit.

Is 310S suitable for wet corrosive service?

It resists general corrosion about as well as 304. But it costs much more and has no molybdenum. For wet chloride or acid service, 316L or duplex is better value.

Can I weld 310S to carbon steel?

Yes, with a filler such as 309 or a nickel alloy. The joint sees thermal stress, since 310S expands more. Design for it, especially in cycling service.

Do you work with 310 stainless steel pipe suppliers and distributors?

Yes. We supply stockists who serve furnace builders and maintenance shops. Mixed sizes can ship together. Ask for our current TP310S size list.

How much does 310S cost compared with 304?

310S has 20% nickel against 8% in 304, so it costs much more in the same size. Price moves with nickel. Send your sizes and we will quote within 2–4 working hours.
