Why Order PPGI From Us

A Paint System, Not Just a Colour

A Paint System, Not Just a Colour

Many quotes list only "RAL 9002, 0.4 mm". We ask about climate and end use first. Then we propose primer, top coat and back coat to match.

PPGI coil test report: zinc mass, coat thickness, pencil hardness, gloss, T-bend, reverse impact and MEK

Numbers on the Certificate

Each coil certificate shows film thickness top and back, gloss, T-bend and MEK results. You get test values, not a pass stamp.

Substrate You Can Trace

Substrate You Can Trace

The galvanized base coil number stays on the PPGI coil tag. If a coating problem appears, we can trace it back to the base coil.

Coil and Sheet From One Order

Coil and Sheet From One Order

We ship pre painted galvanized steel sheet and coils in the same container. We keep 4,000 tons of PPGI in stock (out of 80,000 tons in total). One colour batch serves your roll former and your site.

What PPGI Is: Pre Painted Galvanized Iron, Made on a Coil Line

What PPGI Is: Pre Painted Galvanized Iron, Made on a Coil Line

PPGI stands for pre painted galvanized iron. In practice the base is steel, not iron. The name stays because markets in Asia, Africa and the Gulf still say "GI" for galvanized steel. You will also see PP GI, prepainted galvanized steel and colour coated steel. They all name the same product.

"Pre painted" means the paint goes on before the steel is formed. A galvanized coil runs through a coil coating line. It is cleaned, pre-treated, primed, top-coated and oven-cured, then rewound. This is why the trade also calls it coil coated galvanized steel.

The result is steel that leaves the factory already finished. You roll, bend or cut it, and the job is done. No painting shop, no drying time, and an even finish across thousands of metres.

How to Specify PPGI Steel That Lasts in Your Climate

Most PPGI complaints we handle are not about steel. They are about paint that faded, chalked or peeled too early. Nearly every case comes from a spec that named only colour and thickness.

The Five Layers You Are Buying

Look at a cut edge under a lens and you see the build. From the centre out, there is the steel base, then zinc. On top come a pre-treatment, a primer and the top coat. On the back side sits a thinner back coat.

Each layer has a job. Zinc protects scratches and cut edges. The primer holds the paint to the zinc. The top coat carries colour and weather resistance. The back coat stops rust under the sheet, where condensation sits.

The zinc base is covered on our galvanized pages. For coat weight under paint, see DX51D Z100. For a smooth base that paints well, see Zero Spangle Galvanized Steel.

Choose the Paint System by Sun and Salt

Two things kill paint outdoors: UV light and salt. Rain alone does little harm.

For inland roofs in mild sun, PE is the sensible choice. It costs least and covers most warehouse and housing work. In strong sun, such as the Gulf, Africa or northern Australia, PE chalks faster. Step up to SMP or HDP.

Near the sea, or near chemical plants, look at PVDF. It costs more per ton. Yet repainting a facade costs far more than the paint upgrade.

Do not choose PVDF for a cheap shed. Do not choose PE for a seafront hotel. Matching the system to the site saves more money than any discount.

Film Thickness: Ask for Microns

"Double coated" tells you nothing about how much paint is there. Ask for microns, top and back.

Thin film is the most common hidden saving in cheap PPGI. It looks the same on delivery day. The difference shows after two or three summers.

Gloss, Matt PPGI and Colour Choice

Gloss is measured in gloss units at 60°. High gloss looks bright but shows dents and oil-canning on long sheets. Matt PPGI hides them and reduces glare from large roofs.

Light colours stay cooler and fade less visibly. Dark reds and blues show fading first. If you sell dark colours into hot markets, choose SMP or better.

For repeat orders, keep a signed colour panel. Batches can drift. A panel lets both sides check ΔE instead of arguing over photos.

PPGI vs PPGL, GI and GL

These four names describe two base coats, each bare or painted.

GI: galvanized steel, pure zinc coat, bare

GL: galvalume steel, about 55% aluminium and 43% zinc, bare

PPGI: GI with a paint system on top

PPGL: GL with a paint system on top

PPGL has a base that resists general corrosion longer than an equal-weight zinc coat. PPGI protects cut edges better, because pure zinc sacrifices itself faster. PPGI is also easier to source in heavy coats and tends to cost less.

So which one? For most painted roofing and cladding, a good paint system matters more than the base. PPGI with the right paint covers the majority of projects. If your spec or tender names PPGL, follow it.

If your tender lists GI, GL, PPGI and PPGL side by side, check which items are painted. Our quotes cover GI and PPGI. We can match a GI spec for flashings or hidden parts.

Write It as One Spec Line

Here is a complete line you can send to any supplier:

PPGI coil, 0.45 mm BMT × 1000 mm, DX51D+Z100, top 5+15 µm SMP RAL 9002, back 5 µm epoxy, 25–35 GU, 508 mm ID.

Every supplier quoting that line is quoting the same thing. Now you can compare prices fairly.

What to Check Before You Choose a PPGI Manufacturer

Ask who owns the coating line. PPGI suppliers include mills, coaters and traders. A trader can serve you well, but you should know where the paint goes on. The same applies when a PPGI and PPGL pre painted coil manufacturer quotes both products. Ask which paint brand they use and request its data sheet.

Ask for test values on past certificates, not a sample sheet. A good PPGI manufacturer shares film, gloss and T-bend results without hesitation. If you are a PPGI importer, also ask about colour batch policy. Mixed batches in one container cause the most claims we see.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PPGI stand for?

PPGI stands for pre painted galvanized iron. It is galvanized steel with a factory-applied paint system, made on a continuous coil coating line. The word "iron" is a trade habit. The base is low-carbon steel, usually DX51D, SGCC or ASTM A653 CS.

Is PPGI the same as color coated steel?

Mostly, yes. Color coated steel is the wider term. It also covers painted galvalume (PPGL) and painted cold-rolled steel. PPGI means the base is galvanized. When you order, name the base and the paint system, not just "color coated."

How long does pre painted galvanized steel last?

It depends on paint system, film thickness, zinc coat and site. SMP, HDP and PVDF last longer. Coastal sites shorten every figure. Ask for the paint maker's data, not a general promise.

What is matt PPGI used for?

Matt PPGI is used on large roofs, villas and facades where glare or visible dents are a concern. It has a low gloss reading and a soft look. It costs a little more than standard gloss. It also scratches more visibly during handling, so ask for protective film.

What is the difference between PPGI and PPGL sheet?

The base. A PPGI sheet has a zinc coat under the paint. A PPGL sheet has an aluminium-zinc coat. PPGL resists general corrosion longer for the same coat weight. PPGI gives better cut-edge protection. For most painted roofs, the paint system matters more than this choice.

Can PPGI be painted again later?

Yes. Clean the surface, lightly sand to break the gloss, and use a primer suited to coil coatings. Test a small area first. Repainting is normal after many years on a roof, or when a building changes colour scheme.

How is PPGI price set?

PPGI price follows the galvanized base coil, which moves with steel and zinc. Then paint system, film thickness, colour and order size add their part. PVDF and special colours cost most.
