Which Bar Fits Your Part?

Pick the material first, then the section that saves you the most machining.

If your part is…

Look at

Why

A shaft, pin or bracket that will be painted or oiled

Carbon steel bar

Lowest cost; 45# and similar grades heat-treat well

Wet, outdoor or food-contact

304 or 316 stainless rod

Corrosion resistance with no coating

Turned in high volume on automatic lathes

303 stainless steel rod

Free-machining grade; trades some corrosion resistance for speed

A nut, fitting or bolt head

Hex bar

The flats are already there

A bracket, plate or trim

Flat bar

Cut and drill; no milling needed

From experience: ask for the section closest to your finished part. Turning a hex out of round bar wastes material and machine hours you have already paid for.

Bar or Rod: Is There a Difference?

Bar or Rod: Is There a Difference?

In daily trade, the two words mean the same thing. Many buyers say "rod" for smaller round sizes, such as a 6 mm steel rod. They use "bar" for larger rounds and for square, hex and flat sections.

What matters more is how you specify it. Give us the section, size (diameter, across flats or width × thickness), length, grade and surface. Add the diameter tolerance if your machining needs it, such as h9 or h11.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a steel bar and a steel rod?

In trade use, almost none. "Rod" usually means a smaller round section. "Bar" covers larger rounds and also square, hex and flat sections. Order by section and size, not by the word, and you will get the right product.

Can I order different grades and sections together?

Yes. You can mix carbon and stainless bar, and round, square, hex and flat sections, on one container. List each item with grade, section, size, length and weight.

Can you machine parts from bar?

Yes. We turn, mill, drill and thread parts on CNC lathes and machining centers. Maximum turning diameter is 500 mm, with tolerance down to ± 0.02 mm. Send a drawing with tolerances, grade and quantity.

How do I get a price for steel bar?

Send the material, grade, section, size, length, surface, quantity and destination port. For standard products we reply within 2–4 working hours.
