Why Source Stainless Steel Sheet From MTS

Stainless steel processing line in our plant

Processing In One Place

We run 20 cut-to-length lines, 10 slitting lines and 7 recoiling lines in our own plant. A 6 kW fiber laser, CNC press brakes, brushing and polishing lines finish the job. You receive sheets ready for your production line, not coils you need to process again.

Checking stainless steel sheet thickness with a caliper

Thickness and Flatness Under Control

We check dimensions after each processing step, with calipers, tape and CMM. Tolerances follow ASTM A480 or EN 10088-2, or your drawing. Our cut-to-length lines level each sheet and hold length ±2 mm up to 3000 mm; ±3 mm for longer sheets.

Capacity, Stock and Delivery From Wuxi

We process up to 100,000 tons a month on our own lines. Behind them, our Wuxi warehouses cover 60,000 m² and hold 80,000 tons of steel. Containers are loaded with our own cranes and ship from Shanghai, Qingdao or Tianjin, whichever suits your route.

Stainless steel sheet finishes No.8, No.4, No.3 and 2B

One Order, Several Grades and Finishes

Most fabricators need more than one grade. A kitchen equipment plant may use 304 for work surfaces and 430 for back panels. A cladding contractor may need No.4 and hairline sheets from the same batch.

You can combine grades, thicknesses and finishes in one container. We pack each size on its own pallet with clear labels. That saves you a second supplier, a second inspection and a second freight bill.

Mixed loads also cut your stock risk. You order what this month's jobs need, not a full container of one size.

How to Buy Stainless Steel Sheet: A Buyer's Guide

Most problems with stainless steel sheet orders come from the inquiry, not the mill. A wrong grade, a missing tolerance or an unclear finish costs more than a few dollars per ton. This guide covers what to settle before you place a bulk order.

Choose the Grade by the Environment, Not the Price

Start with where the finished part will live. Indoor, dry, low-salt settings rarely need more than 304. For many indoor panels and appliance parts, 430 does the job at a lower cost.

Move to 316L when the part sees salt, de-icing chemicals or chlorinated water. Coastal handrails, pool equipment and food plants with brine fall here. A 304 sheet in these places will tea-stain within a season.

201 is often quoted to win on price. It works for indoor furniture and decoration. Do not use it outdoors, near the sea, or for parts that stay wet. If a quote looks far below the market, ask whether it is 201 sold as 304.

For heat, pick by temperature. 304 is fine for ovens and grills. Furnace parts and heat shields that run hotter need 310S. Exhaust parts that heat and cool many times a day suit 321.

Cold Rolled vs Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Sheet

Cold rolled stainless steel sheet is the common choice for thin gauges. We supply it from 0.27mm up to 6mm. It has tighter thickness tolerance, a smoother surface and finishes like 2B and BA. Use it for anything visible or precision-formed.

Hot rolled stainless steel sheet starts at 3mm and carries a No.1 finish. It costs less per ton at heavier gauges. Use it for tanks, frames and structural parts where looks matter less. We cut it from hot rolled coil on our own lines, from 3 to 16mm, and up to 20mm on request. Above about 6mm, most buyers and mills call it plate rather than sheet.

Gauge, Millimeters and Tolerance

Buyers in North America order by gauge. Mills in Asia and Europe roll in millimeters. Mismatches here cause most thickness complaints.

For stainless steel, 16 gauge is about 1.59mm, 18 gauge about 1.27mm and 20 gauge about 0.95mm. Note that stainless gauges differ slightly from carbon steel gauges. Always write the thickness in millimeters or inches on your purchase order.

Then state the tolerance. ASTM A480 and EN 10088-2 set default limits. If your laser cutter or press brake needs tighter limits, say so at the quote stage. A sheet rolled to the lower limit is in spec but weighs less.

Pick the Finish for the Next Process

If you will polish, paint or laminate the sheet, buy 2B. It is the cheapest cold rolled finish and the easiest to polish further.

If the surface is final, choose the finish your customer will see. Brushed No.4 hides fingerprints and scratches better than BA or mirror. Hairline suits long panels like elevator doors. Mirror and PVD colors need careful packing and film on both sides.

Order all sheets for one project from the same batch. Brushed and hairline lines vary slightly between batches. On a wall of panels, that difference is easy to see.

What Drives the Stainless Steel Sheet Price

Grade comes first. Nickel and molybdenum are the costly elements, so 316L costs more than 304, and 304 more than 430. Most mills add a monthly alloy surcharge that follows the nickel market.

Thickness comes next. Thinner sheet costs more per kg because it needs more rolling passes. Finish, film, cut-to-size work and small order quantities add to the base price.

For this reason, a fair quote is per ton or per kg for one grade, thickness and finish. Compare quotes on the same specification, with the same film and tolerance. A lower price on a looser spec is not a saving.

When Sheet Is Not the Right Form

Sheet is not always the cheapest way to buy. If you run a stamping or roll-forming line, coil or slit strip often costs less per ton. You also lose less material to offcuts.

If your parts are thicker than about 6mm, ask for plate instead. Plate is produced and priced on a different basis. If most of your parts are small blanks, ask for laser-cut parts from sheet. That moves the scrap cost to the supplier and saves you cutting time.

How to Check the Sheets You Receive

Ask for the EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate before shipment. Check that the heat number on the certificate matches the marking on the sheet. Check the chemistry against the grade standard you ordered.

On arrival, measure thickness at several points on a few sheets. Check that the finish side is the side with film.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the stainless steel sheet price per kg?

The price per kg depends on grade, thickness, finish and quantity. Nickel prices move it month to month. 316L usually costs well above 304, and 430 below it. Send us your grade, size and tonnage. We will quote a current price per kg or per ton within 2–4 working hours.

What sizes do stainless steel sheets come in?

The most common size is 4x8, or 1219×2438mm. Standard widths are 1000, 1219 and 1500mm, in lengths of 2000, 2438 and 3000mm, so metric sizes like 1000×2000mm and 1500×3000mm are easy to supply. We also cut sheets to any length up to 6000mm on our own lines, so you avoid offcuts in your own shop.

Is 304 stainless steel sheet magnetic?

Annealed 304 sheet is almost non-magnetic. Bending, rolling or deep drawing can make it slightly magnetic, but that does not change its grade. If a sheet is strongly magnetic, it is likely 430 or another ferritic grade. A PMI test or the mill certificate confirms the grade.

What is the difference between stainless steel sheet and plate?

The difference is thickness. Sheet usually means material under about 3mm, cold rolled. Plate means 3mm and thicker, usually hot rolled. Please note that stainless steel sheet in the thickness range of 3 mm to 6 mm is available in both cold rolled and hot rolled types. Some US buyers draw the line at 3/16 inch, or 4.76mm. We supply cold rolled sheet up to 6mm and hot rolled plate from 3mm, so state the exact thickness and finish on your order.

Which stainless steel sheet finish is best for commercial kitchens?

For kitchen walls, counters and equipment, most buyers choose 304 with a No.4 brushed finish. It cleans easily and hides scratches and fingerprints. Use 2B for parts hidden from view. Avoid mirror finish on work surfaces, as every mark shows.

Can I order plain stainless steel sheet and decorative sheet in one shipment?

Yes. You can combine plain 2B or No.1 sheet with brushed, mirror or colored sheet in one container. Each size and finish goes on its own labeled pallet. Decorative sheets get film and interleaving paper, so they arrive in the same condition they left.

Which standards do your stainless steel sheets meet?

Our sheets are supplied to ASTM A240, EN 10088-2, JIS G4305 or GB/T 3280. Tell us the standard your project specifies. The mill certificate will state the standard, grade and test results for each heat.

Can you cut stainless steel sheet longer than 6 meters?

Yes, as a made-to-order long sheet. We routinely cut sheets up to 6000mm. Longer sheets need special packing and container space, so transport options are limited. Check the freight route before you order sheets over 6m.
