Why Order Galvanized Steel Tubes From Us
Zinc Weight You Can Check
We state the coating in g/m², not "heavy" or "light". Each lot is tested with a coating gauge or strip test. The result goes on the mill certificate.
Clear Specifications and Bundle Labels
Galvanized steel tubes are supplied to agreed dimensions, wall thicknesses and standards. Bundle labels make it easy to identify the products and check them against your order on receipt.
Pipe and Tube in One Shipment
Order NPS water pipe, square tube and fence tube together. One supplier means one set of documents and one container plan.
Threaded, Grooved or Plain End
We cut, thread, couple and groove in house. Caps protect threads and plain ends in transit.
8–12 Working Days Lead Time
Typical lead time is 8–12 working days. Mill orders for special walls take 2-3 weeks depending on specific demand.
Galvanized Carbon Steel Pipe & Tube That Lasts Outdoors
Galvanized steel pipe is mild carbon steel with a zinc coat. Some buyers call it CS galvanized pipe; in the UK it is galvanised mild steel tube. The zinc protects the steel twice. It seals the surface, and it corrodes first where the coat is scratched.
That is why galvanized metal pipe & tube suit outdoor frames, fences, sprinkler lines and site structures. You get decades of service at a fraction of the cost of stainless. The key choice is how the zinc goes on. Hot-dip galvanizing gives a thick coat inside and out. Pre-galvanized pipe & tube are made from coated strip, so the coat is thinner but smoother.

How to Buy Galvanized Pipe & Tube Without Costly Mistakes
Most problems with galvanized pipe orders come from four places. The size was read the wrong way. The coat was thinner than expected. The standard did not match the fittings. Or black pipe was quoted against galvanized. Here is how to avoid each one.
1. Read the Size the Same Way We Do
This is where pipe and tube must be kept apart. Galvanized pipe uses NPS. Galvanized tubing uses the real OD.
A 2 inch pipe is 60.3 mm OD. A 2 inch round tube is 50.8 mm OD. Your list may say "1 1 2", "1.5" or "inch and a half". All three mean 1-1/2". Fractions often lose their slash in email. If there is any doubt, add the OD in mm.
DN sizes have the same trap. A 50mm order may mean DN50 pipe at 60.3 mm OD, or tube with a 50 mm OD. We confirm before we quote.
2. Choose the Coating, Not Just "Galvanized"
Hot-dip galvanized pipe is dipped after it is made. Zinc covers the inside, outside and weld. A typical coat is 300–600 g/m², which is roughly 40–85 µm. Choose it for water, fire lines and anything buried or outdoors.
Pre-galvanized pipe & tube are formed from zinc-coated strip. The strip carries 60–275 g/m² of zinc in total for both sides, so each side gets roughly 4–19 µm. The inside and the weld line get less protection. Choose it for indoor frames, furniture and greenhouses, where a smooth finish matters more.
Electro-galvanized pipe & tube get a thin, bright zinc layer of 5–20 µm. It suits indoor parts and furniture tube, not outdoor or buried lines.
If your spec gives a number, such as 550 g/m², send it. Coating weight changes the price.
3. Match the Standard to Your Fittings
ASTM A53 is the main US standard. Our A53 galvanized pipe is usually Grade B, Type E (welded) or Type S (seamless). It uses NPT threads and ASME B36.10 walls. For sprinkler lines, we also supply ASTM A795 and A135. For line pipe, API 5L Grade B.
BS 1387, now replaced by EN 10255 (steel S195T), is the British standard. It is common in the Middle East and Africa. It uses BSP threads and Light, Medium and Heavy walls. "BS M" on a drawing means BS 1387 Medium. NPT and BSP threads do not mix, so tell us which one your fittings use.
For structural frames, EN 10219 (S235JRH / S355J2H), JIS G3444 (STK400 / STK500) and Chinese Q195–Q355B are common. The zinc coat itself is tested to EN 10240, ISO 1461 or AS/NZS 4680, as your spec requires.
For drinking water lines, check local rules. Some projects call for NSF 61 approval. Galvanized pipe rarely carries it, so confirm before you order.
4. Black Pipe vs Galvanized Pipe
Black pipe is the same steel without zinc. Some lists call it BI pipe. "BI and GI pipe" on a tender means both. Black galvanised pipe usually means black pipe and galvanized pipe on one order.
Use black pipe for gas lines, where galvanized coating can flake into regulators. Also use it for parts you will paint or weld heavily. Use GI for water, sprinklers, fences and outdoor structures. In parts of Asia, "GI and GP pipes" means hot-dip galvanized (GI) and pre-galvanized (GP).
What Drives Price
Steel and zinc set most of the cost. Hot-dip costs more than pre-galvanized, because it uses more zinc. Heavy walls, seamless pipe, large LSAW / SSAW sizes, threading and short cut lengths add cost. For a firm price, send your size list with the standard, coating and quantity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GI pipe the same as galvanized steel pipe?
Yes. GI stands for galvanized iron, an old name that stuck. Today GI pipe, galv pipe and galvanized steel pipe all mean carbon steel pipe with a zinc coat. Some lists shorten it further to "gal pipe". We read them all the same way.
What is 2 inch GI pipe in mm?
A 2 inch GI pipe is DN50. Its real outside diameter is 60.3 mm. The wall depends on the standard: 3.91 mm in Sch 40, or 3.65 mm in BS 1387 Medium. Always quote OD and wall when you compare offers.
What is the galvanized pipe standard for water lines?
ASTM A53 and BS 1387 / EN 10255 are the most common, with the zinc coat to EN 10240. Each country also has its own code. For example, China uses GB/T 3091, Japan JIS G3444 and Australia AS/NZS 4680. Send your project spec, and we will match the standard and thread type.
Can I buy galvanized pipe & tube for sale from stock?
Yes, for common sizes. Galvanized pipe from 1/2" to 4" in Sch 40 and BS 1387 Medium is usually in stock. We keep 9,000 tons of galvanized pipe & tube in stock (out of 80,000 tons in total). Other sizes and walls are made to order. Send your size list to check availability.
How long does galvanized pipe last?
Outdoors, a hot-dip coat often lasts 20 to 50 years, depending on the climate. Coastal and industrial air shortens it. Buried pipe needs extra wrapping in wet or salty soil. Pre-galvanized pipe lasts less outdoors, because its coat is thinner.
How much does galvanized steel pipe & tube cost?
Price depends on size, wall, coating weight and quantity. Steel and zinc prices move it week to week. Send your list, and we will quote within 2–4 working hours. Quotes are valid for 3 days.
