Why Order SS Pipes & Tubes From MTS
One Supplier for Process Lines and Fabrication
Order NPS process pipe, instrument tube and square structural pipe & tube together. One set of documents covers the whole job.
Prime Material From Leading Mills
Our welded pipe & tube start from coil and plate supplied by our long-term mill partners: TISCO, Tsingshan, Baowu, POSCO, JISCO, Hongwang, ZPSS, Delong and Yongjin.
Tested Before It Ships
Every length is hydro or eddy current tested to its standard. Heat exchanger tube is bright annealed and tested length by length.
Cut and Finished in Our Plant
Our tube laser cuts pipe & tube up to 350 mm OD, 10 mm wall and 9 m long. We also polish to Ra 0.8 µm and brush to No.4 or HL, so pipe & tube arrive ready for your fabrication shop.
Processing Capacity, Stock and Delivery
We process up to 100,000 tons a month and keep 3,000 tons of stainless pipe & tube in stock in 60,000 m² of warehouse space in Wuxi. Our own cranes load every container, and orders ship from Shanghai, Qingdao or Tianjin.
Industrial Stainless Steel Pipe & Tube in Two Sizing Systems
Industrial stainless steel pipe & tube carry fluids, gases and loads in almost every plant. The steel is the same. What differs is how you size it.
Stainless steel pipework is ordered by nominal size and Schedule, so it fits standard fittings and flanges. Stainless steel tubing is ordered by exact outside diameter and wall, for instruments, heat exchangers and machines. We supply both, so you can buy every line on your drawing from one supplier

How to Order the Right Stainless Steel Pipe & Tube
Most orders that go wrong share one cause. The size was written one way and read another. These five points prevent that.
1. Pipe Sizes and Tube Sizes Are Not the Same
This is the one place where pipe and tube must be kept apart. Pipe uses NPS, a name, not a measurement. Tube uses the real OD.
A 2 inch pipe is 60.3 mm OD. A 2 inch tube is 50.8 mm OD. So "2 inch diameter stainless steel pipe" or "2in stainless pipe" can mean two products. If your list says only "2 inch," we quote NPS 2" pipe and confirm with you.
Metric sizes have the same trap. A 50mm order may mean DN50 pipe (60.3 mm OD) or 50 mm OD tube. Fractions also get lost in emails. "1 1 2" means 1-1/2", and "1.5 in" means the same. Send the OD in mm when in doubt.
2. Schedule or Wall Thickness
Pipe wall follows Schedule. For stainless, ASME B36.19 adds an "S": 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S. Carbon pipe follows ASME B36.10. From 1/2" to 10", Sch 40S and Sch 40 have the same wall.
Tube wall is stated directly, in mm or decimal inch. Copy the wall from your drawing. If you only know pressure, temperature and medium, send those. We will suggest a wall.
3. Grade Family
Almost all stainless pipe & tube is austenitic. Austenitic stainless steel pipe & tube (304, 316, 321, 310S) welds well and stays tough in the cold. 304L is the default for water and food. 316L is the default where chlorides appear.
Go beyond them only for a clear reason. Duplex gives strength and chloride resistance. 310S handles heat. 904L and 317L serve strong acids. 409 and 410 are mainly exhaust grades and are rarely sold as A312 pipe.
4. Standard and Certificate
ASTM A312 covers seamless and welded pipe. Grades carry a "TP" prefix, such as TP321 or TP347. ASME SA312 is the same specification for code work, and A312M is the metric version. For an ASME stainless steel pipe order, size comes from B36.19 (also written ANSI B36.19 or B36.19M), and material from A312.
ASTM A269 covers general service tubing, seamless and welded. You will see it as A269 TP304, A269 TP316 or A269 TP316L. Boiler and heat exchanger tubing follows A213 instead. Order "A269/A213" dual-marked tube if your spec names both.
5. Length, Ends and Bending
Our standard length is 6 m. Seamless pipe & tube run 4–12 m and can be cut to 5, 8, 9, 10 or 12 m. Welded pipe & tube come in 6, 9 or 12 m, and in 14–18 m to order, at extra cost because straightness is harder to hold. A 20 ft stainless steel pipe fits a 40' container. In a 20' container, order 5.8 m. Ask for straightness checks if the straight pipe & tube will run through a bender or a positioner.
Large diameter welded pipe up to 1,600 mm OD comes in single lengths of 6–12 m, at most 14 m; 12 m is the usual limit for road transport. From 1,600 to 2,000 mm OD, each shell is usually 3–6 m long, and up to 8 m with extra-wide plate at a clearly higher cost. From 2,000 to 3,000 mm OD, plate width limits each shell to 2–3 m. These shells are joined on site with girth welds into longer tanks or towers.
Bent stainless steel tubing saves welds and fittings. Custom and pre bent pipe & tube are quoted to your drawing. For bendable tubing, choose annealed tube with even wall. We also supply laser cut lengths to stainless steel pipe & tube fabricators. Perforated pipe & tube are quoted on request.
What Drives Price
Grade sets most of the cost, since nickel and molybdenum move every week. Seamless costs more than welded. Small OD, tight tolerance, heavy wall, polishing and extra tests add cost. For a firm price, send your list with grades, sizes and quantities.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is stainless steel pipe & tube used for?
Stainless steel pipe & tube carry water, steam, chemicals, food and gases. Pipe runs in process plants and utilities. Tube serves instruments, heat exchangers, machines and structures. Choose the grade by the medium, and the size system by how the line connects.
Is SUS pipe the same as SS pipe?
Yes. SUS is the Japanese JIS name for stainless steel. SUS304 and SUS316L match ASTM 304 and 316L in chemistry. JIS pipe & tube sizes differ slightly, so tell us if your drawing follows JIS G3459 or G3463.
Can stainless steel pipe & tube be buried?
Yes, with care. Buried stainless steel pipe needs protection where soil is wet or salty. Use 316L or duplex, wrap or coat it, and keep it away from carbon steel. Check local codes before choosing stainless underground.
Do you supply 321, 347 and 904L pipe & tube?
Yes. We supply seamless TP321 from 6 to 660 mm OD and TP347 from 6 to 610 mm OD. Both are stabilized grades for 425–815°C. We also supply 904L pipe & tube, often ordered as ASTM 904L to B677, for strong sulfuric acid.
Can I order tube by ID?
Yes. Send the ID and wall, for example a 1/2" ID tube with 0.065" wall. We confirm the matching OD before quoting. Most standards control OD and wall, not ID, so the ID is a calculated value.
How much does stainless steel pipe & tube cost?
Price depends on grade, size, wall, process and quantity. Nickel and molybdenum prices change it week to week. Send your size list and we will quote within 2–4 working hours.
