Why Buy Stainless Coil From MTS

Stainless steel coil being recoiled

Coils That Fit Your Uncoiler

Tell us your decoiler ID, maximum OD and lifting limit. Our 7 recoiling lines split or rewind coils to match, down to a few hundred kg for thin gauges. You do not pay for a coil you cannot load.

Slit and Cut on Our Own Lines

Our 10 slitting lines cut strip from 20mm wide, up to 14mm thick (16mm on request). Our 20 cut-to-length lines turn coil into sheets up to 2000mm wide. One order can include coil, strip and sheets.

Measured After Each Process

We check dimensions after every processing step, with calipers, tape and CMM. Surfaces are inspected under light before film goes on. You get the mill certificate plus our processing report.

Capacity and Stock on One Contract

Capacity and Stock on One Contract

We process up to 100,000 tons a month and hold 80,000 tons in our Wuxi warehouses. Common sizes ship from stock. Special sizes go into the next mill rolling. Both can load in the same container.

Coil Is Cheaper to Process, If You Buy It Right

Coil Is Cheaper to Process, If You Buy It Right

Most stainless steel coil does not stay a coil. It is slit into strip, cut into sheets, or fed into a tube mill or press. Buying in coil lets you cut only the lengths you need, so yield goes up and offcuts go down.

That only works when the coil suits your line. Wrong ID, a coil too heavy for your crane, or wavy edges will cost more than the price saved.

So we start with your equipment, not with our stock list. Send the end product and the line you run. We will propose grade, finish, width and coil weight together.

If you need a quick load, ask for our stainless steel coil stock sizes.

Stainless Steel Sheet in Coil

Stainless Steel Sheet in Coil

Sheet-width coil (1000–2000mm) for buyers who cut their own sheets. Buyers often call it SS sheet coil. Cold rolled stainless steel sheet in coil is cheaper per ton than the same size in cut sheets. If you prefer flat sheets, we cut them on our own lines. See our Stainless Steel Sheet.

What "Flat Rolled" Coil Means

Stainless steel flat rolled coil is any coil rolled from a slab into a flat strip. It covers both hot rolled and cold rolled coil. Mills call this the flat products range, as opposed to long products like bar and wire.

Hot rolled coil comes first. It is thicker and has a dull pickled surface. Cold rolled coil is hot rolled coil that has been rolled again at room temperature. It is thinner, flatter and smoother.

Choose hot rolled when you need thickness and strength more than looks. Choose cold rolled for anything thin, visible or formed.

Coil Weight and Inner Diameter

Check your decoiler before you order. Most stainless lines take an ID of 508mm or 610 or 760mm. A coil with the wrong ID will not load.

Then check weight. Mill coils can run past 20 tons. Many small service centers can only lift 5 to 10 tons. Ask for the coil weight you can handle. We recoil to the weight you can handle, down to a few hundred kg for thin gauges, for a small charge.

Heavier coils mean fewer changeovers. If your crane allows it, take the heavier coil.

Mill Edge or Slit Edge

A mill edge is the natural edge from rolling. It can be slightly cracked or uneven. That is fine if you will slit or trim anyway.

A slit edge is cut clean to an exact width. Choose it if the coil feeds a press or tube mill without trimming. It costs a little more, but it saves your own slitting step.

How Much Length Is in a Coil

You can work out coil length from weight. Divide the weight by thickness, width and density.

For example, a 5-ton 304 coil at 1.0mm × 1219mm holds about 517 meters. That uses a density of 7.93 g/cm³. A 316L coil of the same size holds a little less, because 316L is heavier at about 7.96 g/cm³.

Use this to compare a coil price with a sheet price on the same basis.

Coil or Sheet: Which Should You Buy

Buy coil if you have a slitter, cut-to-length line or roll former. You get any length you want, less scrap and a lower price per ton.

Buy sheet if you cut on a laser or shear and have no decoiler. Leveling a coil without the right line causes coil set and wavy sheets. The savings disappear in rework.

A middle option is stainless steel sheet in coil, cut to length on our own lines. You get the coil price plus a cutting charge, and sheets in your exact length.

Stock Coil or Mill Order

Stock coil is the fastest way to buy stainless steel coil. It suits urgent orders and mixed small sizes. The range is limited to common grades, widths and finishes.

A mill order takes longer time, but you choose the exact size, finish and coil weight. For steady monthly volume, a mill order usually works out cheaper.

Many buyers mix the two. They take stock for the first container and a mill order for the next ones.

Choosing Between 400 Series and 200 Series Coil

Both are cheaper than 304, but for different reasons. 430 and 409 save money by using no nickel. 201 and 202 replace some nickel with manganese.

For indoor appliance panels, 430 is usually the safer choice. It is stable and easy to form. For tube and furniture that must not be magnetic, 201 or 202 is common.

Neither is right near the coast or in wet chemical service. There, pay for 304 or 316.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between stainless steel coil and stainless steel strip?

Coil usually means wide material, around 1000mm or more, as it leaves the mill. Strip usually means coil slit to narrow widths, often under 600mm. Strip also tends to come with tighter thickness and width tolerances. If you need narrow widths, check our strip range.

What coil weights can you supply?

Mill coils run from about 5 to 28 tons. Our 7 recoiling lines split them into smaller coils, down to a few hundred kg for thin gauges, on 508 or 610mm or 760mm ID. Tell us your maximum weight and OD when you send the inquiry.

Is an SS coil magnetic?

It depends on the grade. 300 series coils such as 304 and 316 are non-magnetic when annealed. They can turn slightly magnetic after cold work. 430, 409 and 410 coils are magnetic. A magnet test does not prove the grade, so ask for the mill certificate.

Can you supply stainless steel coil with PVC film?

Yes. We apply PVC or laser film on one side. Laser film is used if you will cut the coil on a fiber laser. Film is common on BA, No.4 and HL coils, and optional on 2B.

Do 409 stainless steel coil suppliers usually keep stock?

Stock of 409 and 409L coil is less common than 304 or 430. Most 409L goes straight from the mill to exhaust parts makers. We supply 409L and 410 coil as mill orders.

How are stainless steel coils packed for export?

Each coil is wrapped in waterproof paper and plastic, then banded. Coils sit eye-to-wall on wooden or steel cradles. Edge protectors stop damage in transit. We lash coils in the container to prevent shifting at sea.
