Why Order SS 410 Round Bar From Us

01

All Hardenable Grades in One Order

410, 416, 420F, 420J2, 431, 440C and 430F come from one supplier. Valve, pump and tool makers can cover a full parts list in one container.

02

416, 420F, 420J2 and 430F are available as ground bar from Φ5 to Φ30 mm, to h7/h8. Shafts, pins and valve parts need little or no turning.

03

Large Sizes up to 600 mm

For big shafts, valve bodies and rolls, 400 series bar runs up to Φ600 mm. We peel it when you need a clean surface and accurate size.

04

Clear Delivery Condition

Every certificate states the condition: annealed, hardened and tempered, or stress relieved. No guessing at goods-in.

Stainless That Can Be Hardened

410 is a martensitic stainless steel with about 12% chromium. Unlike 304, it can be hardened by heat treatment. It is also magnetic.

That makes 410 stainless round bar the base grade for valve stems, pump shafts, turbine parts and fasteners. You get moderate corrosion resistance plus strength and wear resistance that 304 cannot reach.

Use it in mild environments: steam, fresh water, oil and indoor air. For seawater or chemicals, an austenitic or duplex grade is the safer choice.

Buying 410 Round Bar: Condition, Hardness and Grade Choice

With austenitic bar, the grade decides most of the result. With 410 and other martensitic bar, the heat treatment matters just as much. The same grade can be soft and machinable, or hard and brittle. This guide covers what to specify.

Annealed or Hardened: Which Should You Buy?

Buy annealed bar if you will machine the part heavily, then harden it yourself. Annealed 410 machines much like a mild alloy steel.

Buy hardened and tempered bar if you machine lightly and want no heat treatment afterward. Your part is ready to use once cut. You save a process step and avoid distortion.

If you are not sure, tell us your machining and final hardness. We will suggest the delivery condition.

What Hardened Stainless Steel Rod Can Reach

Typical hardness after hardening and tempering:

  • 410: about 20–40 HRC, depending on temper
  • 420: up to about 50 HRC
  • 431: about 25–40 HRC, with better toughness
  • 440C: about 58–60 HRC

Higher hardness means better wear resistance, but lower toughness. For shafts that take shock, a lower temper is safer than maximum hardness.

Temper Brittleness: A Common Mistake

410 and 420 lose impact toughness when tempered between about 400°C and 550°C. Parts can pass a hardness check and still crack in service.

Specify the tempering temperature, or a minimum impact value, for load-bearing parts. A good supplier will raise this with you before you ask.

410, 416, 420F, 420J2, 431 or 440C?

410 is the all-rounder. It suits valve stems, bolts and pump parts in mild service.

416 machines much faster thanks to added sulfur. It gives up some corrosion resistance and toughness. It is a good fit for screw-machine parts that need to be magnetic or hard.

420F and 420J2 carry more carbon, so they harden further. 420F adds sulfur for machining. 420J2 suits knives, surgical tools and mold parts.

431 adds nickel and more chromium. It is the best of the group for corrosion and toughness. Choose it for shafts near water or in marine pumps.

440C is the hardest. Use it for bearings, balls and wear parts. It is harder to machine and grind, and more brittle.

For free-machining parts that do not need hardness, compare with our 303 Stainless Steel Rod.

Where 410 Bar Should Not Be Used

410 rusts in seawater, chloride solutions and acidic cleaners. It can also show surface staining in humid outdoor air.

In those cases, choose 431 first. If 431 is still not enough, move to an austenitic or duplex grade, and accept lower hardness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 410 stainless steel round bar magnetic?

Yes. 410 is martensitic, so it is strongly magnetic in both annealed and hardened condition. This makes it useful for solenoid and sensor parts that also need some corrosion resistance.

Can I order 410 bar in a set hardness range?

Yes. Tell us the range in HB or HRC, or the tensile range, when you inquire. We supply bar in the condition you specify, and the certificate states the result.

Is 410 cheaper than 304?

Usually yes, because 410 contains no nickel. Its price is also less affected by nickel market moves. Heat treatment and testing add cost, so compare quotes in the same condition.

Can 410 round bar be welded?

Yes, with care. Preheat to about 200–300°C and temper after welding. Without this, welds and heat-affected zones can crack. For welded structures without heat treatment, 304L is easier.

Are you one of the 410 stainless steel bar suppliers that stock all 400 grades?

We supply 410, 416, 420, 420F, 420J2, 431, 440C, 430, 430F, 444 and 446, in round bar up to Φ600 mm, from our 4,500 tons of stainless bar stock in Wuxi or by mill order. Mixed grades can ship in one container.

What is the difference between 430 and 410 rod?

430 is ferritic and cannot be hardened. It has more chromium, so it resists rust a little better than 410. 410 can be hardened for strength and wear. Choose 430 for formed or decorative parts, 410 for loaded parts.
