Why Buy A653 Steel From Us

01

Your Designation, Read Correctly

A653 orders fail when one part of the designation is missed. We check grade, type, coating and surface treatment before we book the mill.

02

Coating You Can Verify

Each lot is tested for total zinc on both sides and results appear on the certificate.

03

Mill Certificates to A653/A653M

Certificates show chemistry, tensile results and coating mass. They follow EN 10204 3.1 format.

04

US Gauges and Sizes

We cut sheet to inch sizes and quote by gauge or decimal inch. You do not have to convert anything.

05

8-12 Days for Common Grades

CS Type B in G60 and G90 ships in 8-12 days. SS grades and heavy coats take 2-3 weeks.

A653 Galvanized Steel: One Standard, Many Grades

ASTM A653 covers steel sheet coated with zinc or zinc-iron alloy by the hot-dip process. A653M is the metric version of the same standard. Most orders quote both, as “ASTM A653/A653M”.

The standard does not name one steel. It is a family. Commercial Steel (CS) is for general bending and forming. Forming Steel (FS) and Deep Drawing Steel (DDS) are for harder shapes. Structural Steel (SS) has a minimum yield strength for load-bearing parts. Your designation tells the mill which one to make.

A653 Grades We Supply

A653 CS Type B

A653 CS Type B

The most ordered A653 galvanized steel. Good bending for ducts, panels and general parts.

A653 FS and DDS

A653 FS and DDS

Forming and drawing grades for deeper pressing, such as appliance parts and enclosures.

A653 SS Grade 33 to Grade 50

A653 SS Grade 33 to Grade 50

Structural grades with a minimum yield. A653 Gr 33 suits framing and decking; Grade 50 suits lighter, stronger sections.

A653 HSLAS

A653 HSLAS

High-strength low-alloy steel for weight savings in racks and transport.

G90 Galvanized Steel Sheet

G90 Galvanized Steel Sheet

The heaviest common coat, for outdoor and building use. Equal to Z275 in metric orders.

G60 and G30 Galvanized Steel

G60 and G30 Galvanized Steel

Lighter coats for indoor parts and painted panels. Lower zinc, lower cost.

How to Read and Order to ASTM A653

Read the Designation in Four Parts

A typical line reads “ASTM A653 CS Type B G90”. It has four parts. The standard is A653. The steel is Commercial Steel, Type B. The coating is G90. Surface notes, such as chem-treated and oiled, come last.

If any part is missing, the mill will choose for you. That is how buyers end up with G60 when they needed G90. Always send the full line.

CS Type A, B or C?

CS Type B is the default for most of the market. It has a carbon limit that gives steady bending. Type A allows more carbon. Type C is a lower-cost option for less demanding forming. If your drawing just says “A653 CS”, we quote Type B unless you say otherwise. An astm a653 csb line on an order means the same thing.

SS Grades Are About Strength

Choose SS when your part carries load, such as studs, purlins or deck. Grade 33 has a minimum yield of 33 ksi (230 MPa). Grade 50 has 50 ksi (340 MPa). Higher grades are less formable, so check your bend radius.

Choose the Coat by Where the Part Lives

G90 is the building-code standard for many outdoor uses in North America. It is the safe choice for framing, roofing and outdoor ducting. G60 often suits indoor ducts and protected parts. G30 is for parts that will be painted or used indoors.

Do not over-buy. A G90 coat on an indoor appliance panel adds cost without benefit. And do not under-buy. A G30 coat on an exposed part will rust years early.

A653 vs the Old A525, A526 and A527

Older drawings may still say ASTM A526 or ASTM A527. A526 covered commercial quality, and A527 covered lock-forming quality. In the 1990s, these were merged into A653. Today, an order to A526 is filled as A653 CS. An A527 order is usually filled as A653 CS or FS, depending on how hard the seam lock is.

A653 vs DX51D and SGCC

If you buy from Asia, you may be offered DX51D or SGCC in place of A653. They are close equivalents for general use. However, coating is stated differently. Z275 to EN 10346 is close to G90, but the test method differs. If your contract names ASTM A653, ask for the certificate to say so. A JIS SGCC sheet metal certificate will not pass a US inspection by itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ASTM A653 steel?

ASTM A653 is the US standard for steel sheet that is hot-dip coated with zinc or zinc-iron alloy. It covers coil and cut sheet. It sets grades, coating weights and mechanical properties. A653M is the same standard in metric units.

What does G90 mean on galvanized steel?

G90 means 0.90 oz of zinc per square foot, counted on both sides together. That is about 275 g/m², so G90 matches Z275. Each side carries roughly 0.45 oz/ft², or about 19 µm.

Is Z275 the same as G90?

They are very close and are usually treated as equal. Z275 galvanised steel is specified in g/m² under EN 10346. G90 is in oz/ft² under ASTM A653. The test methods differ slightly. If your contract names one, the certificate should name it too.

What is ASTM A653 G60?

G60 is a lighter coat of 0.60 oz/ft², about 180 g/m² both sides. It suits indoor ducting and protected parts. It costs less than G90. Choose G90 if the part sits outdoors or in damp air.

Is ASTM A653 the same as SGCC?

They are close equivalents for commercial-quality sheet. SGCC is the Japanese JIS G3302 grade. A653 CS Type B is the US version. Mechanical limits and coating units differ. Order to the standard your customer's spec names.

What are G90 galvanized sheet metal prices based on?

Prices depend on thickness, width, grade and coating weight. G90 costs more than G60, because it uses more zinc. Steel and zinc markets move it weekly. Send your designation and quantity, and we will quote within 2-4 hours. Quotes are valid for 3 days.
