Why Buy Cold Rolled Coil From MTS

01

Tolerance Agreed in Writing

We confirm your thickness and width tolerance in writing before production. Width is held on our own slitting lines, and dimensions are checked after every step.

02

Surface Checked Under Light

Before film goes on, we check the surface under light for scratches, roll marks and pits. Visible-grade BA and 2B coil are filmed straight after the check.

03

Temper Matched to Your Part

Stamping, springs and deep draws need different hardness. We specify the temper by your part, then confirm it with hardness results on the certificate.

04

Flat Enough for Your Line

Shape is checked for edge wave and center buckle. Coil we cut to length is leveled on our own lines.

05

Stock and Delivery From Wuxi

We process up to 100,000 tons a month. Common 2B and BA sizes come from our 7,000 tons of stainless coil stock (out of 80,000 tons in total) and ship in 8–12 working days, loaded by our own cranes.

Cold Rolled Stainless Steel Coil close-up

Thinner, Flatter and Smoother Than Hot Rolled

Cold rolling takes hot rolled stainless coil and rolls it again at room temperature. The coil gets thinner and flatter, and its surface becomes smooth and even.

After rolling, the coil is hard and brittle. It is then annealed to soften it, and pickled or bright annealed to restore the surface. That sequence decides the final finish and hardness.

If your part is thin, visible or formed, it should start as cold rolled coil. If it is thick and hidden, hot rolled coil is usually cheaper and good enough.

Cold Rolled Coil by Finish

2B Cold Rolled Coil

2B Cold Rolled Coil

Annealed, pickled and skin-passed. Smooth, semi-bright and the most common finish. Used for tanks, tube and parts you will polish.

BA Cold Rolled Coil

BA Cold Rolled Coil

Bright annealed in a protective atmosphere. Reflective, low roughness. Used for appliance panels, trim and cookware.

2D Cold Rolled Coil

2D Cold Rolled Coil

Annealed and pickled, with no skin pass. Dull matte surface that holds lubricant well. Used for deep drawing and parts that will be painted or hidden.

Cold Rolled Coil by Grade

304 / 304L Cold Rolled Coil

The standard choice for kitchen equipment, tube and pressing.

316L Cold Rolled Coil

For sanitary tube, marine and chemical equipment.

201 Cold Rolled Stainless Steel Coil

Low-nickel grade for indoor tube, furniture and utensils. Example: 201 2B coil, 0.6mm × 1219mm.

430 Cold Rolled Coil

Magnetic ferritic grade for appliance panels and liners. Often supplied in BA.

301 Cold Rolled Coil

Sold in tempers from annealed to full hard, for springs, clips and structural panels.

Cold Rolled Stainless Coil: Finish, Temper and Tolerance

Cold rolled coil is ordered on more details than hot rolled. Get the finish, temper and tolerance right, and the coil runs well. Get one wrong, and it shows in every part.

2B, BA or 2D: Choose by What Happens Next

Choose 2B as the default. It is cheap, available and smooth enough for most work. It also polishes well if you need a brushed finish later.

Choose BA when the surface is the product. Appliance fronts and trim often use BA without further polishing. Keep it filmed, because BA shows every scratch.

Choose 2D for deep drawing. The dull surface holds drawing oil better. It also costs a little less, since it skips the skin pass. Do not use 2D on visible parts.

What Temper Means and When You Need It

Annealed cold rolled coil is soft and easy to form. That is what most buyers need.

Some parts need strength instead. Springs, clips and light structural panels use hard tempers. The coil is rolled after annealing to raise its strength. ASTM A666 lists tempers from 1/4 hard to full hard.

301 is the usual grade for hard tempers. It hardens faster than 304 when rolled. If your drawing names a temper, give us the hardness or tensile range too.

Shape: Edge Wave and Center Buckle

A coil can be the right thickness and still be wavy. Edge wave and center buckle come from uneven rolling across the width.

Shape matters most when you cut the coil to length. Wavy coil makes wavy sheets, even after leveling. Ask for shape limits if you will cut flat blanks.

Common Surface Defects to Check

Open the outer laps on arrival. Look for roll marks, scratches, pits and oil stains. Also check for a difference in color between the edge and the center.

Most surface defects run the full length of the coil. If you see them on the first laps, report them before you process the coil. Once cut, the cause is much harder to show.

When to Use Hot Rolled Coil Instead

Above about 6mm, cold rolled coil gets expensive and hard to find. Hot rolled coil covers that range at a lower cost.

If your part is thick, will be painted or will be hidden inside equipment, hot rolled may be the better buy. See our Stainless Steel Hot Rolled Coil page for the thicker range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the thinnest cold rolled stainless steel coil you supply?

We supply cold rolled coil from 0.27mm. Below that, the material is usually sold as precision strip. Thin gauges cost more per ton because they need more rolling passes.

Is 201 cold rolled stainless steel coil a good substitute for 304?

Only for dry indoor use. 201 replaces part of the nickel with manganese, so it costs less. It is harder to form and less resistant to corrosion. Use it for indoor tube, furniture and utensils. Avoid it for wet, outdoor or food-acid service.

What does 2B mean on stainless steel cold rolled coil?

2B is a finish code from ASTM A480 and EN 10088-2. It means cold rolled, annealed, pickled and skin-passed. The skin pass gives a smooth, slightly bright surface. It is the most common cold rolled finish.

Can you supply cold rolled coil in a hard temper?

Yes, mainly in 301 and 304. We supply tempers from 1/4 hard to full hard, to ASTM A666 or your hardness range. Tell us the temper or the tensile strength you need.
