Why Buy Hot Rolled Coil From MTS

01

Annealed and Pickled, Ready to Use

No.1 coils are fully annealed and pickled. You get a clean, scale-free surface and the corrosion resistance of the grade.

02

Wide Coils for Wide Plates

Widths up to 2000mm let you cut wide plates without welding seams. Ask for width when you plan tank or vessel shells.

03

Thickness Checked Across the Width

Hot rolled coil can be thicker in the center than at the edges. When we cut or slit your coil, we check thickness after each step and list it in our processing report.

04

Flat Plates Cut in Our Plant

Our 20 cut-to-length lines level and cut coil into plates up to 16mm thick (20mm on request). You can buy coil and plate on the same order.

05

Processing Capacity and Stock

We process up to 100,000 tons a month and hold 7,000 tons of stainless coil (out of 80,000 tons in total) in our Wuxi warehouses. Our own cranes load plates and coils for Shanghai, Qingdao or Tianjin.

The Lowest-Cost Route to Thick Stainless

Hot rolled coil is the first flat product a stainless mill makes. Every cold rolled coil and most plate under 20mm start from it.

Buying at this stage gives you the lowest cost per ton for thick stainless. You skip the cold rolling and finishing steps you may not need.

The trade-off is surface and tolerance. A No.1 surface is dull and slightly rough. Thickness tolerance is wider than cold rolled. For tanks, structures and hidden parts, that is usually fine.

Hot Rolled Coil by Condition

No.1 Hot Rolled Coil (HRAP)

No.1 Hot Rolled Coil (HRAP)

Hot rolled, annealed and pickled. Clean, dull silver surface, fully softened. The standard for direct use and cutting into plates.

Black Hot Rolled Coil

Black Hot Rolled Coil

Hot rolled with the oxide scale still on, not annealed. Sold to cold rolling mills as feedstock. Not for direct use.

Hot Rolled Coil by Grade

304 / 304L Hot Rolled Coil

For tanks, frames and thick welded tube. Example: 304L No.1 coil, 6.0mm × 1500mm.

316L Hot Rolled Coil

For chemical and coastal equipment where 304 will pit.

321 Hot Rolled Coil

Titanium-stabilized for heat exchangers, furnace parts and exhaust ducting.

409L and 410S Hot Rolled Coil

Ferritic grades for exhaust systems, boiler parts and wear liners. Lower cost, with no nickel.

2205 Duplex Hot Rolled Coil

High strength and pitting resistance for chemical tanks and offshore structures. Often a mill order.

How to Buy Stainless Steel Hot Rolled Coil

Hot rolled coil looks simple next to cold rolled. Fewer finishes, fewer tempers. But the choice between conditions, widths and suppliers still decides your cost and your scrap.

No.1 Coil or Black Coil

Black coil comes straight off the hot strip mill. It carries a dark oxide scale and has not been annealed. Its corrosion resistance and ductility are not yet at grade level.

Black coil is sold to cold rolling mills. They anneal, pickle and roll it themselves. Unless you run that process, do not buy black coil to save money.

No.1 coil has been annealed and pickled. That is the one to buy for fabrication, plates and tube.

Who Buys Hot Rolled Coil, and What Each Should Order

Service centers and plate distributors buy wide No.1 coil and cut it to length. Order the widest coil your leveling line takes. Specify flatness after leveling, not just coil thickness.

Cold rolling mills buy black or No.1 coil as feedstock. Check chemistry, width and thickness profile. These decide the yield of the cold rolling line.

Fabricators and tube mills buy No.1 coil for direct use. Here, surface quality and width tolerance matter most. Ask for trimmed edges if the coil goes straight into forming.

What a No.1 Surface Should Look Like

A good No.1 surface is dull, even and silver-grey. Some roughness is normal. It comes from hot rolling and pickling.

Reject coil with leftover scale, deep pits or rolled-in marks. Those spots can rust and are hard to clean later. Check the first laps and any visible edge cracks on arrival.

Thickness Profile Across the Width

Hot rolled coil is often thicker in the middle than at the edges. This is called crown. A small crown is normal.

For cut plates, crown means each plate varies across its width. If your part needs tight thickness, ask for a crown limit, or buy cold rolled instead.

Cut Plates From Coil or Buy Mill Plate

Plates cut from hot rolled coil are cheaper and faster than mill plate. They are limited to about 20mm and to coil widths. For thicker or wider plates, mill plate is the only route. We explain the difference on our Stainless Steel Plate page.

When to Switch to Cold Rolled Coil

Below about 3mm, hot rolled coil becomes hard to roll and hard to find. Cold rolled coil takes over there, with a better surface and tighter tolerance.

Choose cold rolled if the part is thin, visible or precision-formed. See our Cold Rolled Stainless Steel Coil page for that range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness does hot rolled stainless steel coil come in?

We supply hot rolled stainless steel coil from 3.0 to 20mm. Thicker material is made as mill plate rather than coil.

What does No.1 finish mean?

No.1 is a finish code in ASTM A480. It means hot rolled, annealed and pickled. The surface is dull and slightly rough, with no scale. It is the standard finish for hot rolled stainless coil and plate.

Is hot rolled stainless steel coil cheaper than cold rolled?

Per ton, yes, at the same grade. Hot rolled coil skips cold rolling and finishing steps. But compare at the same thickness. In the 3mm range where both exist, the price gap is smaller.

Can you cut hot rolled coil into plates for us?

Yes. We cut No.1 coil to length on our own leveling lines, 2000–6000mm long as standard (shortest 500–700mm) and up to 12000mm on request. Plates are bundled on skids. You can mix coils and cut plates in one shipment.

What is the widest hot rolled stainless coil you supply?

Up to 2000mm in 304 and 316L. Width depends on the grade. Tell us the plate width you need, and we will confirm it from stock or a mill order. Our cut-to-length lines take coil up to 2000mm wide.
