Why Order 316 Stainless Round Bar From Us

01

Every Route From 3 to 300 mm

Cold drawn bar from Φ3 to Φ100 mm, ground bar for precision parts, and forged black bar up to Φ300 mm. You get the whole 316 size range from one supplier.

02

Molybdenum You Can Check

316 depends on molybdenum for its pitting resistance. Our certificates show the actual Mo value per heat, not just “conforms”.

03

Free-Machining 316

For high-volume turned parts, we supply free-machining 316 round bar from Φ4 to Φ125 mm. It cuts faster than standard 316 and keeps most of its corrosion resistance.

04

SS 316 Rod close-up

Built for Salt, Chlorides and Clean Processes

316 adds 2–3% molybdenum to the 18-8 base of 304. That small change raises pitting resistance a lot. 316 rod handles seawater spray, brine, mild acids and cleaning chemicals that would stain 304.

Choose ss 316 round bar for parts that live outdoors near the sea, or in chemical and pharma plants. Indoors and dry, 304 does the same job for less.

SS 316 Rod: Where It Works and Where It Stops

316 is often called “marine grade”. That label is half true. 316 rod resists chlorides far better than 304, but it has limits. Knowing them saves you from failures and from paying for grades you do not need.

316, 316L or 316Ti?

Standard 316 allows up to 0.08% carbon. 316L limits carbon to 0.03%, so welded zones keep their corrosion resistance. For most buyers, dual-certified 316/316L bar is the simplest choice.

316Ti adds titanium to tie up carbon. It is a European habit, often written as 1.4571. It suits welded parts that run hot, above about 400°C. If your drawing says 1.4571, order 316Ti round bar. If not, 316L does the same job and is easier to find.

Why Molybdenum Content Matters

The 316 spec allows Mo from 2.00% to 3.00%. Bar near the bottom of that range passes the spec, but pits sooner than bar at 2.2–2.5%.

If your part sees seawater or chlorides, set a minimum Mo on your order, such as 2.10%. We show the actual value on the certificate, so you can see what you received.

How Far Can 316 Go in Chlorides?

316L handles seawater spray, splash zones and rinsed marine fittings well. It struggles in stagnant seawater, under gaskets and in warm brine. There, crevice corrosion can start within months.

A useful guide is the pitting resistance number, PREN. 304 sits near 18–20. 316L sits near 24–26. Duplex 2205 sits near 35, and super duplex above 40.

For fully submerged or warm chloride service, 316 is not enough. Look at 317L, 904L or Duplex Round Bar instead.

When to Step Up From 316

317L adds more molybdenum. It suits stronger acids in pulp, paper and chemical plants.

904L adds copper and much more nickel. It handles sulfuric acid and warm seawater better than 317L.

Duplex 2205 gives higher PREN and twice the yield strength. For shafts and fasteners, it often lets you use a smaller diameter.

If your part is indoors, dry or in fresh water, do not step up at all. 304 will do.

Machining 316 Rod

316 is gummier than 304 and work-hardens quickly. Use sharp tools, steady feed and plenty of coolant. Do not let the tool rub.

For high-volume turned parts, choose free-machining 316. Its added sulfur breaks chips short and extends tool life. For welded parts, stay with 316L.

Medical and Pharma Use

316L bar is common in surgical tools, pharma fittings and lab equipment. Implants need special implant grades, such as 316LVM to ASTM F138.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 316 rod and 316L rod?

316L has lower carbon, 0.03% max versus 0.08%. This keeps weld zones from corroding. 316 has slightly higher minimum strength. Dual-certified bar meets both specs, so you rarely need to choose.

Is SS316 rod suitable for boat parts?

Yes, for fittings, cleats, rails and above-water parts. For propeller shafts and fully submerged parts, duplex or special shaft alloys usually last longer. Keep 316 clean and avoid tight crevices that trap seawater.

Is 316 rod magnetic?

Annealed 316 is non-magnetic. It stays less magnetic than 304 after cold drawing, because its higher nickel stabilizes the structure. Very heavily drawn small rod can show slight magnetism.

Is free-machining 316 as corrosion resistant as standard 316?

Not quite. The sulfur that helps it machine also creates small weak points for pitting. It still outperforms 304 in most chloride service. For seawater immersion or welded parts, choose 316L.

Do you supply 316L stainless steel round bar suppliers and stockists?

Yes. We ship 316L bar to distributors in mixed-size containers, from our Wuxi stock. Each bundle is tagged with size and grade. Ask for our current stock list.
