Clean Lines for Frames, Rails and Machines

Square and rectangular pipe & tube give flat faces to bolt, weld and mount. They resist bending better than round tube of the same weight.

That is why stainless steel square pipe & tube frame food machines, kitchen equipment, shop fittings, gates and balustrades. In 304 they stay clean indoors. In 316 they hold their finish outdoors and near the sea.

How to Order Stainless Steel Square Pipe & Tube

Size, Wall and Corner Radius

Square pipe & tube are sold by outside size × wall, such as 40 × 40 × 1.5 mm. Schedule and NPS do not apply.

Ask about corner radius if parts must fit flush. Cold formed square tube has an outside radius of about 1.5 to 2.5 times the wall. Sharp corner tube, made by extra forming, costs more but looks crisper on furniture and display parts.

Which Standard?

Most stainless square tube is made to ASTM A554. A554 covers welded mechanical and ornamental tubing, including square, rectangular and oval shapes. You will see it written as ASTM A554-16 or a later year.

A554 tube is not meant for pressure. If your frame carries structural loads, ask for ASTM A500 or EN 10219 or a project-specific spec. For fluid lines, use round pipe & tube instead.

Almost all square tube is welded, ERW cold formed. Seamless square tube is extruded, with walls from about 3 mm, for heavy machinery. It is rarely stocked and is made to order.

304, 316 or 201?

304 is right for indoor frames, kitchens and food machines. It welds well and stays clean with normal care.

Choose 316 for outdoor railings within a few kilometers of the sea, pool areas and de-icing salt zones. 304 tends to tea-stain there.

201 costs less, with lower nickel. 201 and 304 are the usual grades for decorative railings, doors and windows. Keep 201 to dry indoor decoration. Don’t use it outdoors or in food contact.

Square, Rectangular or Oval?

Square tube carries load equally in both directions. It is the default for posts and table legs.

Rectangular tube puts more steel where the bend is. For a beam that bends one way, it is stronger per kilogram than square. Set the long side vertical.

Oval tube is chosen for looks and grip. It fits handrails and furniture where a round section looks too plain.

Finish and Weld Seam

For visible parts, order the finish before cutting. Satin #320 is the most common for railing and furniture. Mirror finish shows every mark, so it needs film and careful handling. For polishing options in detail, see Polished Stainless Steel Pipe & Tube.

The weld seam runs along one face. On satin tube it is polished out and hard to see. On mirror tube it may show. Turn the seam face inward on your design.

Avoiding Problems in Fabrication

Thin wall square tube can dent in clamps. Use soft jaws.

Welding heat leaves tint on the faces. Pickle or polish welds on 316 used outdoors. Otherwise, the heat tint will rust first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ss square tube the same as stainless steel square pipe?

Yes. Buyers use both names for the same product. Square sections are always sold by outside size × wall, so "pipe" here does not mean NPS sizing. Send size, wall, grade and finish.

What is the most common size for railing posts?

For ss railing square pipe posts, 40 × 40 mm and 50 × 50 mm are common. Wall is usually 1.5–2.0 mm. Top rails often use 40 × 20 mm rectangular or a round or oval section. Local building codes set the load each post must carry.

Can you cut square pipe & tube to length?

Yes. Our tube laser cuts lengths, notches and holes, up to 350 mm and 9 m long. Cut pieces are packed with film intact.

What lengths can you supply?

Standard length is 6 m, and we cut to any length, including 3, 9 or 12 m. The maximum single length is 12 m. Lengths up to 11.8 m fit a 40HQ container; longer pieces ship as break bulk. Shorter pieces are laser cut to your drawing.

How much does stainless square tube cost?

Price depends on grade, size, wall, finish and quantity. Mirror finish and thin wall add cost. Nickel prices move the base price. Send your size list and we will quote within 2–4 working hours.
