Why Order 304 Coil From MTS

01

Grade Ordered for the Job

We ask what the coil will become before we quote. Tube, sinks and slit strip need different 304 coils, even at the same thickness.

02

Dimensions Checked at Every Step

After slitting, cutting or recoiling, we check width, thickness and length with calipers, tape and CMM. Hardness and elongation are on the mill certificate for each heat.

03

Coils Split to Your Line

Full mill coils, or recoiled to your weight, down to a few hundred kg for thin gauges on 508 or 610 or 760mm ID for smaller decoilers. Our slitting lines cut widths from 20mm for tube and stamping lines.

04

Processed and Loaded in Wuxi

We process up to 100,000 tons a month, with 80,000 tons of stock in our Wuxi warehouses. Our own cranes load each container for Shanghai, Qingdao or Tianjin.

304 Coil That Runs Without Stopping Your Line

When you buy SS 304 coil, the grade is only the start. What matters is whether the coil runs through your line without breaks, cracks or scrap.

A tube mill needs steady width and good weldability. A deep-drawing press needs fine grain and high elongation. A slitter needs flat coil with even thickness across the width.

These are three different orders, even though each says “304”. Tell us your process. We will specify the grade, temper and tolerance that keep your line running.

304 BA Coil

304 BA Coil

Bright annealed surface for appliance panels, cookware and decorative tube. Usually supplied with PVC film.

304L Stainless Steel Coil

304L Stainless Steel Coil

Carbon at or below 0.030% for heavily welded parts. Used for welded tube in water and food service.

304 Hot Rolled No.1 Coil

304 Hot Rolled No.1 Coil

Hot rolled, annealed and pickled, from 3.0mm to 20mm. Cut into plates or used for heavy tube and flanges.

304 Slit Coil

Buying 304 Coil for Your Own Production Line

304 is the default grade for coil buyers. That makes it easy to buy, but also easy to buy wrong. This guide covers how to order 304 coil for three common lines, and what to check before it runs.

For Welded Tube: 304 or 304L

Welded tube is the biggest use of 304 coil. The coil is slit, formed and welded in one pass.

For decorative and furniture tube, plain 304 is fine. For tube carrying water, food or chemicals, choose 304L or dual-certified coil. The lower carbon stops chromium carbides forming at the weld. Those carbides would make the seam rust first.

Width tolerance matters too. A slit width off by a fraction of a millimeter changes the tube diameter. Ask for slit width tolerance in writing.

For Slitting and Resale

Service centers buy wide 304 coil and slit it for local customers. Here, flatness and thickness across the width matter most.

Order coil with a center-to-edge thickness difference you can accept. Check for edge wave and center buckle on the first lap. Most slitting problems start with shape, not with grade.

SS304, 304 and 304L on One Certificate

Many mills now certify one coil as both 304 and 304L. The carbon is low enough for 304L, and the strength high enough for 304. This dual-certified coil suits both welded and general work.

If your customer writes SS304 or SUS304 on the drawing, a dual-certified coil meets it. If the drawing needs EN 1.4307 or 1.4301, ask for the EN grade on the certificate. Our 304 Stainless Steel Sheet page lists the full grade names across standards.

When 304 Coil Is Not the Right Choice

Near the sea, in pools or with chlorides, 304 coil will pit and stain. Choose 316L coil there.

For indoor appliance panels that need no welding, 430 coil costs much less and does the job. Use 304 where its formability and corrosion resistance are actually needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SS 304 coil price per ton today?

It changes with the LME nickel price, often within the same week. Thickness, finish and coil weight also change it. Send your size, finish and tonnage. We will quote today's 304 coil price per ton, valid for 3 days.

Do you have 304 stainless steel coil in stock?

Yes. 304 coil in 2B and BA is part of our 7,000 tons of stainless coil stock in Wuxi. Send your sizes and we will confirm. Slit or recoiled stock coil ships in 8–12 working days. Other sizes are made to order.

What is the difference between 304 and 304L coil?

304L has a lower carbon limit, 0.030% instead of 0.07%. That makes the weld zone less likely to corrode. 304L is slightly lower in strength. Choose 304L for welded tube and tanks, and 304 for general forming.

Can I use 304 coil for food-grade tube?

Yes. 304 and 304L coil are widely used for food and dairy tube. Choose 304L for the weld, and ask for a 2B or BA finish for easier polishing. Your tube standard may require extra tests, so tell us which one applies.

What coil weight should I order for a small slitter?

Match the coil to your decoiler capacity and crane, not to the mill's standard weight. Many small slitters run 3–8 ton coils. Our recoiling lines split mill coils to the weight you need, down to a few hundred kg for thin gauges, for a small charge.
