Zero Spangle Galvanized Steel

Zero Spangle Galvanized Steel

Zero Spangle Galvanized Steel Sheet and Coil

We supply zero spangle GI sheet and coil, from 0.09 mm in coil and 0.25 mm in sheet, up to 3.0 mm, with Z40 to Z275 zinc. The surface shows no zinc flowers, so paint, film and print go on evenly.

Controlled zinc bath and fast cooling for a uniform, flower-free surface

Skin-passed for a smooth, matte finish and good flatness

Chrome-free or paint-friendly passivation for coil coating and powder lines

Surface quality B or C on request, checked on the inspection line

Why Buy Zero Spangle GI From Us

01

A Surface You Can Paint Over

No spangle pattern means no "ghost" pattern through thin paint. Your coated parts look the same from coil to coil.

02

Skin Pass for Flatness

Our zero spangle coil can be supplied either **skin-passed or non-skin-passed** after coating.

Skin-passed option flattens the strip and delivers a fine, even surface texture, ideal for structural parts and painting.

Non-skin-passed version retains original ductility, better suited for deep drawing and heavy forming applications.

03

Treatment Agreed in Advance

We match the passivation to your paint system. That avoids adhesion failures that show up weeks later.

04

Made on Our Own Line

Zero spangle is a standard surface on our own continuous hot-dip line in Wuxi, which coats 20,000 tons a month. Our own color coating line uses the same base for PPGI.

05

8–12 Working Days Lead Time

Typical lead time is 8–12 working days, and shorter for sizes in stock.

What Zero Spangle Means

Spangle is the flower-like crystal pattern you see on some galvanized steel. It forms as the zinc cools and grows large crystals. Zero spangle galvanized steel is made so these crystals stay too small to see.

The mill uses a high-purity zinc bath with almost no lead or antimony. It also cools the strip quickly after the bath. Then a light skin pass smooths the surface. The result is a matte, uniform grey with no visible pattern. That is the surface coil coaters and appliance makers ask for.

Is Zero Spangle Worth Paying For?

Zero spangle usually costs a little more than regular spangle. Whether that pays back depends on what you do with the steel next.

Where It Pays Back

It pays back on any part that is painted and seen. Coil coaters need it because spangle can show through thin paint films. Appliance and cabinet makers need it because a flower pattern under paint looks like a defect.

It also pays back in powder coating. A flat, uniform zinc surface heats and cures evenly. You get fewer gloss differences across a panel.

Where It Does Not

If the steel will be used bare outdoors, the look does not matter much. A regular spangled galvanised surface protects just as well. Ducts hidden above ceilings, fence sheets and farm buildings rarely need zero spangle.

Zero vs Minimized Spangle

The two are often confused. Minimized spangle (M in EN 10346) has small but sometimes visible crystals. Zero spangle has none you can see. Some mills sell minimized spangle as “zero”. If the look matters, ask for a sample sheet before you book a full order.

Does Zero Spangle Change Corrosion Protection?

No, not in any meaningful way. Protection comes from the zinc weight, not the crystal size. A Z275 zero spangle sheet protects like a Z275 spangled sheet. Choose the coat class for corrosion, and the spangle for appearance.

The Treatment Matters as Much as the Spangle

Many paint failures on zero spangle sheet come from the wrong passivation. Chromate layers can reduce paint adhesion. For coil coating, most lines ask for untreated or chrome-free surfaces. Tell us your paint system before production.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is zero spangle GI sheet?

It is galvanized steel sheet with no visible zinc crystal pattern. The surface is smooth, uniform and matte. It is made with a lead-free zinc bath, fast cooling and a skin pass. It is used mainly for painted and visible parts.

Is zero spangle the same as galvalume?

No. Zero spangle describes the surface of a pure zinc coat. Galvalume is a different coat of aluminum and zinc. Galvalume also shows its own spangle pattern. Both can be used as a base for color coating.

Why is zero spangle used for PPGI?

Paint goes on evenly over a flat, uniform zinc surface. No spangle pattern shows through the paint film. That gives consistent color and gloss across the coil.

Is zero spangle GI more expensive?

Usually slightly. The line needs a controlled zinc bath, faster cooling and a skin pass. Thickness, coat and quantity matter more to the final price. Send your spec for a quote.

Do you supply zero spangle galvanized steel in coil?

Yes. Most of our zero spangle goes out as coil, because coil coaters and stamping lines run it continuously. We wind to 508 or 610 mm ID and recoil to 4–5 ton small coils or 8–10 ton large coils (up to 12 tons). Tell us your decoiler limits, and whether you need slit widths from 15 mm.

Can I get zero spangle with a heavy Z275 coat?

Yes. Heavier coats are harder to keep fully flower-free, so ask for a sample if appearance is critical. Many buyers use Z275 zero spangle for painted outdoor panels.
